"My goal this year is to get record numbers of students out there working on the Day of Caring," said Melanie Arpaio, psychology professor and faculty coordinator for the SCCC Center for Diversity and Equality.
"Last year we wowed the United Way of Sussex County with our campus participation in this wonderful day of community service. We had 32 campus volunteers, including faculty, staff, and students.
"At a bare minimum, [the United Way of Sussex County] would love us to provide 30 volunteers. I don't see why we can't reach for 40 and really help them out on this day."
Here's what's needed:
Homestead Nursing Home in Newton requests volunteers to read to the senior residents and to spend some quality time in conversation with them. Several students did this last year and found it really rewarding.
Norwescap is working with Ideal Farms to provide fresh foods for the food banks in our area. Pickers and drivers are needed at Ideal Farms. (The United Way says we can send as many volunteers as we want.)
DASI (Domestic Abuse Services, Inc.) of Newton has two projects for us. They need some yardwork volunteers at DASI headquarters, and they need volunteers to move furniture and other items (pick-up truck required).
Liberty Towers in Newton has a really special request. One volunteer is needed to create a Liberty Towers website for access to applications, forms, info., directions, etc.
Samaritan Inn in Franklin is requesting a lot of volunteers to paint two apartments. The United Way is really requesting help with this one.
Knoll Heights Village in Sparta is requesting handyman and yard work help with window washing, garden clean up, and small chores.
Prospective volunteers should contact Arpaio at (973)300-2146.
