Punk-ska band "Big D and the Kids Table" came through Sayreville, New Jersey this weekend to rock the house to a packed crowd of kids hungry for music. Starland Ballroom was the venue for the punk show that took place on Good Friday.
"Big D and the Kids Table" is a punk-ska Band from Boston, Mass. The term 'ska' refers to a type of punk rock music that includes, but is not limited to, guitar, bass, drums, various woodwind/brass instruments, and an organ. "Big D" exercises all of these instruments with relish. To the band's foundation of guitar, bass, and drums, "Big D tastefully" adds saxophone, trumpet, and trombone, giving the songs deeper colors and layers.
Two weeks after "Big D" released their latest album, "Strictly Rude," they were ready to show off their new, more mature sound. They started off the Starland Ballroom set with "Souped-Up Vinyl," a song about working hard and partying hard.
Mid-show, while the band was playing their new single, "Noise Complaint," two bras flew onto the stage. One hit guitarist Sean Rogan; the other landed nearby. When the song ended, singer, David McWane said, "Wow, Jersey and Florida are the only two states to give us their bras!"
Toward the end of "Big D's" time on stage, McWane said, "At our booth we have the names and numbers of your local and state leaders." He encouraged the sweaty, dancing kids to let their voices be heard and to make a difference in the world. The song "Try Out Your Voice," which deals with the frustration of war and political leaders, followed.
The last song played by "Big D" was "LAX." This is an angry anthem that shuns rich, snobby kids. During the song, with his microphone extended out, McWane leaped into the crowd. A sea of hands pat his shoulder and gave him a high fives as he surfed over the mob like he was riding a wave.
The supporting bands on the "Big D" tour include "Alexisonfire," "Set Your Goals," and the politically charged punk band "Anti-Flag." There are 15 dates left on this tour, which stops in Georgia, Florida, Washington DC, Texas, and Pennsylvania. "Big D and the Kids Table" will be back on the road for this summer's "Warped Tour"
