Steve Carell gives a heartwarming performance as Dan in the new movie "Dan in Real Life." Dan is a journalist who writes a weekly column that gives parents advice on how to deal with their children; Dan himself is a father of three girls: two teenagers and one fourth grader.

Dan's wife passed away four years prior and he is still struggling to adjust, while raising his daughters. When he goes to Rhode Island for a family gathering at his parents' house, he meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) in a bookstore and is almost instantly attracted to her. Turns out Marie is in a new relationship, but is fine with seeing Dan as a friend.

When Dan arrives back at his parents' home he tells his brother Mitch (Dane Cook) about the amazing woman he met at the bookstore. Mitch urges Dan to go after her regardless of the fact that she is in a relationship, saying that as long as there is no ring on her finger she is fair game. It is then that Mitch introduces Dan to his new girlfriend, Marie.

At times both funny and awkward, sad and hopeful, "Dan in Real Life" is an easy movie to take in at only a little over an hour-and-a-half. Steve Carell is a great comic actor, but he truly shines in dark comedic or dramatic roles. You will laugh and, at times, tear up, but you will leave with a smile on your face
