The official opening of the exhibit was Saturday, February 16. The exhibit will run until March 15. The art work is on loan to the college for all to see, and is also available for purchase. The artists are donating 15 percent of the proceeds of any sales to the college.
Redline is not new to the business. She has been an artist all her life. A Sussex County resident, Redline understands how important art is in a college student's life. In 1983 she was the first adjunct professor in fine arts at SCCC.
She started the art program by teaching courses in painting, art history and figure drawing. She holds the honorary position of "Artist in Residence" and has continued her adjunct teaching position at SCCC.
"I think this is a beautiful building," Redline said. "I think it is an enriched environment for exploring new ideas.
"The exhibition is very exciting. It is a privilege to show with Roy Kehl."
Roy Kehl is also a Sussex County resident and not new to the art world. "The first piece I made was toward the end of 1996," Kehl said. "This is the second time this [piece] has been at the college, the first time [was] at the art gallery. It is really great the way the stained glass shows in the light." With the many windows in the center, the sun has a clear opportunity to shine right into the art work.
It was Kehl's love for stained glass that started his creative juices flowing. His first piece was created during restoration of his house. He is a self taught artist and really loves what he does. His pieces have been used by many interior decorators and have shown up in many private collections.
"It's a lovely display," said Beth Nehls of Manhattan. "I think this campus is just beautiful and so is this new building."
Another visitor, 11 year old Alexa Place said, "I thought that the art was really cool and very pretty. I would love to see more art like this again one day."
Barbara Wortmann, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and the Foundation at SCCC helped to organize the art exhibit. "The artists agreed to exhibit their work when we opened the new Performing Arts center. They brought their work over so we decided to showcase it for a few weeks."
Young and old alike will enjoy the art exhibit while it is on display at SCCC. Checking out the art that is on display will also give visitors and students the chance to see the new building that many have described as "beautiful space."
The art is on display through March 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. This gives everyone a chance to check some native Sussex County residents' cultural contributions to our college.
